Not so good service
Not one of the better hotels we stayed in during our China tour. Check in seemed to take for ever and was asked to pay a deposit, which i refused to do, given the room was fully paid for months in advance. It took around 20 minutes to check in, which considering we were the only ones, seemed a little excessive. I was given 1 room card and asked for the another for the lights. Shower was a trickle and there was a fusty smell in the room and corridor all the way through our stay. Housekeeping was there saving grace, as the room was always made up and cleaned well. I know the non smoking policy is very new in China and people are getting used to it, but they should perhaps remove the ashtrays near the lifts on every floor, to prevent people smoking inside the hotel.
We haven't seen a worse hotel! It should be noted that the hotel does not correspond to its 4* category, as there were other problems. Upon check-in, in response to our request for 2 keys to a room for two guests, we were told that the keys had run out and new ones would only be available tomorrow morning. Tomorrow we were told that we were not allowed more than one key, but after the intervention of the guide, the key was given out. Thus, the quality of guest service at the Shanghai Zhongxiang Hotel 4* leaves much to be desired! We have not encountered such disgrace in any of the hotels in the world (including hostels without stars). The next morning we handed over the keys and waited for the deposit (300 yuan) to be returned. A few minutes later, a hotel employee came running, waving two small towels, and told us that we had to pay for the damage, since the stains on the towels could not be washed off (on the basis of what examination was such a statement made?!!). We are absolutely convinced that the towels were not taken from our room, we did not use our own and we had nothing to stain them with. The hotel staff present smiled sarcastically. There were stains on the towels that looked like blood. We are over 60 years old and what they were hinting at could not have anything to do with us. It was unbearably unpleasant and disgusting for us! I would like to add that we also did not use bathrobes and slippers in the room. Naturally, we categorically refused to pay. We couldn't imagine a more disgusting situation! Such attitude towards guests! How is this possible, especially in relation to people our age! In fact, there are no stars!
