Why IMPT
Why book through IMPT
Climate-positive hotel marketplace, automatic 1-tonne retirement on every booking, on-chain verification, and no checkout upsell. The argument, in detail.
What IMPT is
IMPT is a climate-positive hotel marketplace and on-chain carbon retirement platform headquartered in Ireland. The platform serves 195 countries through 1.7 million indexed hotel URLs, with the booking layer running through app.impt.io and the carbon layer running through a held inventory of credits on Verra and the Gold Standard.
The defining design choice of IMPT versus other hotel platforms is that the carbon retirement is automatic and included. There is no green fee at checkout, no opt-in box, and no separate purchase. Every booking, every guest, every property — one verified tonne of CO₂ retired on your behalf, recorded on-chain.
Why this matters in 2026
The voluntary carbon market spent 2023-2024 absorbing a credibility hit. A series of NGO investigations (Guardian / Die Zeit / SourceMaterial January 2023, Carbon Brief 2024) found that a significant share of REDD+ forestry credits had failed their additionality tests. Corporate buyers responded by rebalancing toward removal-track credits, away from avoidance.
What this means for travel is that the offset products marketed to consumers in the prior cycle — typically a few dollars for a forestry credit attached to a long-haul flight — are exactly the products that have lost market trust. The platforms still selling them haven't all updated their underlying credit mix. IMPT defaults its retirement weighting toward biochar and mangrove restoration precisely because those tonnes survive the same scrutiny that broke the older mix.
What's different about IMPT vs the other booking platforms
Three differences worth naming. First, the carbon retirement is included rather than upsold — most major OTAs offer offsets at checkout as a separate paid option, which produces low opt-in rates and weak credit selection. IMPT removes the friction by including a credible tonne in the base price. Second, the retirement is on-chain — most offset products do not give you a queryable serial. IMPT does, on every booking. Third, the platform is built around climate-positive travel as a category rather than as a bolt-on — the IMPT token, the wallet integration, the mobile app and the marketplace inventory all share the same climate frame, rather than being added on top of a conventional OTA.
What IMPT does not claim
We don't claim that a hotel-booking retirement makes your trip 'carbon neutral'. It doesn't. The hotel slice of travel emissions is real but is usually not the largest one — flights typically dominate. We don't claim that all voluntary credits are equivalent — they aren't, which is exactly why our retirement weighting is the way it is. And we don't claim that booking through IMPT is the lowest-price option in every city — sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. The argument for IMPT is the carbon retirement, the verifiable record, and the absence of the upsell pattern that defines most of the rest of the category.
What you can do today
Search a city, pick a property, book. The carbon retirement runs automatically. Your confirmation email contains the registry URL, the on-chain transaction hash, and the project ID. Click any of the three to inspect the underlying tonne.
